What to expect

A calm first step into counselling.

You do not need to have the perfect words before contacting Jayne. The first step is simply a way to explore what support may be helpful.

The first steps

Simple, private and at your pace.

Many people feel nervous before starting counselling. This process is designed to feel as clear and reassuring as possible.

01

Send a confidential enquiry

Use the contact form, email or phone. Share only what feels comfortable — you do not need to explain everything in the first message.

02

Initial conversation

Jayne offers a free 15-minute consultation to discuss what you are looking for, answer questions and consider whether counselling may help.

03

Choose how to meet

Face-to-face, telephone, Zoom, Teams and home visits may be discussed depending on your needs, comfort and practical circumstances.

04

Begin at your pace

Sessions are private, respectful and shaped around what feels safe and useful for you. The work develops gradually as trust builds.

Your first session

It is normal to feel unsure, nervous or emotional.

The first session is not a test. It is a chance to get a sense of Jayne, ask questions and begin exploring what has brought you to counselling.

Some people know exactly what they want to talk about. Others only know that something feels wrong, heavy or hard to manage. Both are completely valid starting points.

Jayne may ask gentle questions about what is happening now, what has been difficult, what support you already have and what you hope counselling might help with.

You are in control of what you share.

You can take your time, pause, say you are not ready to talk about something, or ask for clarification. Counselling works best when it feels safe enough to be honest.

  • Private and confidential
  • Non-judgemental and respectful
  • Focused on your needs
  • Flexible around pace and format
Questions people often have

Before starting, it is okay to wonder how it works.

What if I do not know what to say?

You can start with whatever feels easiest. Jayne can help you gently find words for what has been happening.

Is counselling confidential?

Counselling is private and confidential, with normal professional safeguarding limits where someone may be at risk of serious harm.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your needs. Some people prefer short-term support, while others benefit from longer-term work.

Can I ask about fees first?

Yes. You can ask about fees, concessions, frequency and payment before committing to sessions.

Take a moment

Before moving forward, take three deep breaths.

Focus on the air filling your lungs and leaving your body. Then, when you are ready, take the next small step.
